We are learning.....

Kindergarten

We have just begun with Kindergarteners. It has been great to see so many new faces. We started with recognizing, saying and writing names. We will soon be moving on to our letters. We will start with the letter m. During each week we will focus on one or two letters. We will learn the letters name, what sound it makes, identifying pictures that begin with the letter and writing the letter.

Second Grade

We have been working on short a and short i words. We have also been learning high frequency words and vocabulary words that we call "Amazing Words." We will continue to focus on phonics skills as well as our words all year long. Please remember that your child should be reading each night and homework should be completed by Friday.

Parent Tips

Did you know that learning to read is a challenge for almost 40 percent of kids? The good news is that with early help, most reading problems can be prevented.

Beginning readers need lots of practice reading – it takes time, practice, time, and more practice!

Provide varied reading material – some for reading enjoyment and some with information about hobbies and interests

Encourage activities that require reading – for example, cooking (reading a recipe), constructing a kite (reading directions), or identifying an interesting bird's nest or a shell collected at the beach (using a reference book).

Write notes to your school-age child; encourage written responses.
